As our global footprint continues to grow, we are looking for a Principal Autonomy Safety Consultant to join our Functional Safety Team. This position can be located remotely from anywhere within North America.
- Lead the development, or review, or audit/assessment of safety work products for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, including... ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
- Lead the development, or review, or audit/assessment of safety processes and related safety management processes for clients seeking to compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
- Employ established methods and frameworks, relevant to functional safety and related fields, to lead the engineering development or review, or audit/assessment of safety cases for complex software-intensive systems. (Examples of such systems may include self-driving vehicles, industrial automation systems, battery and energy storage systems in both vehicle and stationary applications, and related systems.) Methods and frameworks may include safety analysis such as FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety requirements management, safety concepts such as FSC/TSC work products, system and software architectures, HIL and SIL test, system integration test, vehicle integration test, and system/vehicle validation.
- Lead full training events in topics relevant to functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, and other similar standards.
- Provide mentorship and thought leadership in the development of junior-level engineering personnel
- Lead business development activities defining Statements of Work (SOWs), providing budgetary estimates, and submitting full proposals for client-funded projects. Leverage industry experience and network to win projects and build the business.
- Lead client programs, including major/large-scale client programs, by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews. Address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provide expert technical leadership and guidance to clients in reference to functional safety and related technical fields. Projects may include regular travel to client sites and to other UL locations.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the business by providing technical and market expertise to management planning and report-out activities.
- Coordinates complex laboratory activities by developing data sheets. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.
- Perform verification reviews or other technical review activities as directed. This includes roles requiring independent expert technical judgment , such as PDE, review board chair, and similar roles. Represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
- Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact, reports and written communication, and interactions with client's executive-level leadership. Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
- Provides leadership and technical advice on special projects that involve complex, new or unusual issues. May provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories.
- Contribute to the development of UL technical standards and other relevant technical standards (from ISO, IEC, IEEE, SAE, etc.) by direct participation as member of standards committees
- Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
- Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practice
- Performs other duties as directed.
- University Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related field in a relevant technical field plus 8 or more years of experience.
- Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
- Working knowledge of conformity standards in use in area of expertise.
- Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Experience in data science and data pipeline development for the training and evaluation of artificial intelligence algorithms; and for the verification & validation of such algorithms.
- Strong knowledge of scenario definition and development for the evaluation and specification of autonomous systems (for example using languages (e.g., scenario description language and similar frameworks
- Experience in advanced & emerging software Architectures such as OTA updates, service-oriented architectures (SOA), and Autosar
- Vehicle-level verification and validation of ADAS & autonomous systems using track testing, field testing, and systems integration test for integrated sensing systems
- Verification and Validation of autonomous systems including the use of autonomous vehicle scenario simulation
- Machine Learning algorithms for autonomous application, including the specification, verification and validation of such algorithms
- Human factors expertise and experience in HMI evaluation for SAE level 2 and level 3 autonomous systems
- General experience with ADAS and Autonomous vehicle systems and their relevant safety aspects.
