Job Details

Arch Systems is seeking an insightful and talented Factory Data Scientist to join our rapidly scaling team and generate novel insights from the mass of electronics factory data we are aggregating from around the world and direct their use towards practical ROI opportunities.

ABOUT ARCH

Started by Stanford Engineering PhDs and grown out of non-profit work in Africa, Arch is a venture-backed company working with top Fortune 500 customers to retrofit industrial machines with cutting-edge IoT to drive efficiency, transparency, and next generation intelligence.

We work in partnership with the manufacturing industry with a focus in surface mount technology. We also support a variety of ongoing developing world projects.

We are looking for talented and driven people wanting to transform manufacturing operations and to make the Earth more efficient, connected, and sustainable. Come join our diverse and passionate team.

COMPENSATION

Compensation will be determined for a Factory Data... Scientist (depending on hire’s experience) at a Series A stage technology startup based on experience and location.

We benchmark our compensation against high cost of living/market rates and use a compensation formula that includes a location factor to determine total target compensation as it compares to a high cost of living/market area. At Arch, total target compensation may be comprised of base salary, a completion bonus, and a performance bonus.

Employees in the US can expect generous benefits for themselves and their dependents as well as equity in the company.

Applicants outside the US will be considered to become employees of one of our trusted partners and may receive benefits through them as well as NQSOs from Arch Systems.

REMOTE EQUAL

This is an opportunity to join our remote-equal team from anywhere in the world. We are a remote-equal team largely working from the US and Europe, so the preference is a similar time zone with authorization to work in your country of residence. We are unable to sponsor a Visa at this time.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As an Arch Factory Data Scientist you will be responsible for knowing how to combine deep technical skills in data mining and analysis with factory domain knowledge that you already have or can rapidly acquire to solve manufacturing specific problems. You will work with the largest datasets available in the electronics manufacturing industry, already collected into our data lake. Your role will be to design and run investigations for novel insights. You will methodically present insights to internal and external stakeholders helping zoom in on significant opportunities for factory improvement. You will interact with Subject Matter Experts in Electronics Manufacturing from the top factories in the world, taking problem statements from them and applying your data science skills and factory domain knowledge to find solutions. After having identified candidate insights and presented them articulately to stakeholders, you will work with the broader analytics and software team to build those insights into the product or directly ship them to the customer via dashboards or presentations. You should be intimately familiar with python, Jupiter, pandas for time series analysis and SQL for extracting data from complex database tables stored in AWS Athena with nested records having arrays of structures embedded in each row. Ideally you are capable of using the top existing tools in the field and augmenting our capabilities over time with best practices.

You should know about manufacturing or demonstrate that you can and will rapidly learn it. Backgrounds in industrial fields or physical science are preferred and a clear curiosity and hunger to help optimize the physical world. A cornerstone of Arch’s success is our intimate knowledge of how our customers’ machines and processes work both in theory and practice. Outstanding candidates for this role will be expected to grow into world class Subject Matter Experts in the electronics manufacturing process areas they focus on, combining deep physical understanding of the factory with advanced data science tools to drive the next industrial revolution.

This job is best suited to those with advanced degrees, masters and PhDs, as well as 3-7+ years of industry experience in data science, data processing, and insight generation combined with practical experience with machines and manufacturing or other industrial processes. The ability to articulately present and simplify the complex to customers, with clear visuals and takeaways, is essential.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN AND DRIVE:

  • Designing and running data investigations – Work with large amounts of data, already collected into a SQL data lake, to run investigations that can product insights
  • Generating domain-specific insights – Use data science to generate expert process and machine-relevant insights for our manufacturing customers
  • Customer insight to opportunity framing – In collaboration with sales, customer success and your fellow engineers,, help present key insights to customers, translate insights to opportunities, and down select to true opportunities to enhance customer value as well as Arch’s core platform
  • Continuous Improvement - Contribute to the continuous improvement of the overall analytics team, create new SOPs and methods for data science excellence at Arch. Identify ways our insights can be more accurate and applicable, trustworthy and understandable, timely and enabling.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO THE TABLE:

  • 3-7+ years of professional experience in data science or related software fields. Experience analyzing manufacturing or industrial data is a strong plus.
  • Experience with Python, Jupyter, Pandas, SQL is required. Experience with AWS instructure such as Athena, S3 and datalakes more broadly is a plus. The Arch engineering team works in Python.
  • Masters or PhD degree in statistics/mathematics, physics, computer science, or other physical science or engineering fields
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to balance multiple work streams and great self management to get the focus, no distraction time you need for insight generation
  • Extreme curiosity to understand the customers actual problem and become a process SME vs only play with data.
  • The ability to engage with problem statements at a physical level, applying physical reasoning to prompt your investigations, vs applying cookie-cutter machine learning algorithms to find solutions.
  • Experience applying data science or related software techniques to manufacturing or industrial data is a strong plus. Eagerness to rapidly learn surface mount technology (SMT) and electronics assembly processes is required, though you do not need to be, and probably are not already an expert in these exact areas.

WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT:

  • Experience and domain knowledge in manufacturing and process improvement
  • Specifically any experience or knowledge in PCBA, electronics assembly or surface mount technology (SMT)
  • Experience in communicating complex technical ideas to high level business leaders (managers, directors, up to VPs and C-level)
  • Experience horizontally with data engineering back end to clean and process your own data or on the other side with data analyst and BI front end to display and enable your own findings
  • Experience working with a remote, distributed team

HOW WE WILL SUPPORT YOU:

  • Ambitious and clear vision of how you can be a part of transforming the manufacturing supply chain and building next generation IoT technology
  • Highly motivated and experienced team with the relevant domain expertise and network
  • Ability to deploy your work solving cutting edge problems with Fortune 500 customers and nonprofit developing world partners alike
  • Learning & Development budget to allow you to continue to grow in not only your function, but in any way that relates!
  • Trust in your ability to do your best work when and where you want and to communicate this with your team
  • Flexible Time Off: take the time you need, including an end-of-year break and an ask that all Arch-itects take at least one additional (consecutive) week off each year to recharge in addition to local holidays and religious observances
  • Opportunity to challenge yourself, be nurtured, and grow in a highly dynamic environment
  • A culture that welcomes and encourages autonomy, ownership, and transparency; allowing you to make, learn from, and teach others in your “failures” as much as your successes
  • Potential to travel to annual Arch Summit, when it is safe to gather again in-person
  • A culture of diversity of thought and background with many languages and nationalities on the team
