Senior Manager, Database Engineering

THE TEAM

Zuora’s Technical Operations teams are responsible for Data Center and Cloud infrastructures, monitoring... performance and uptime, managing internal and external shared services, database and infrastructure services and more - for Zuora’s customer facing SaaS products and platforms. Our technologists sit across US, Beijing, India and remotely, using a follow-the-sun model to provide 24x7x365 coverage for critical functions and partner closely with our Engineering, Customer Support, Security, Global Services and Sales teams on a daily basis to keep our customers front and center.

YOUR MISSION: Lead a dispersed team of database engineers, responsible for the architecture, development and reliability of our database services. You will also collaborate with distributed engineering teams on the design, buildout and execution of complex, cross functional projects that require a robust data services platform. You should have experience running both self-managed and cloud native database systems, at scale, in a reliable, secure and cost efficient manner, using a heavy dose of automation.

You’ll be a key player for the future of database platform strategy going forward. You’ll own the database infrastructure to support the billing operations of some of the world’s largest global companies. With our transition to full cloud operations nearly complete, we now have the opportunity to step back and examine our end-to-end database platform — let’s leverage the latest in cloud-native architectural approaches and figure out how to get that in place.

WHAT YOU’LL ACHIEVE

• Continue modernizing Zuora’s database platforms that’ll form the basis of rapid product innovation
• Drive decision making processes and strategies to migrate off a traditional database system to cloud native data services.
• Continuous improvement of automation that manages our database platform.
• Define and refine standards and controls around database and data design, data lifecycle management, security, governance and compliance.
• Be a strong technical mentor and guide for your team and help them grow and succeed.
• Oversee 24x7 coverage of database systems operating in the cloud and on-premise

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Basic Qualifications:

• 6+ years of software development and database engineering experience, encompassing multi-platform database architecture and leading complex database engineering systems with hands on experience administering relational and NoSQL DBMSs such including MySQL, MongoDB, Postgres, Oracle and Cloud database engines.
• Direct and in-depth technical experience with MySQL is a must, including managing Database Engineering teams who manage large scale, globally distributed, production MySQL clusters.
• 3+ years of experience in managing and mentoring global teams
• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and other related fields

Preferred Qualifications:

• Excellent prioritization, planning, communication, documentation skills are all essential qualities.
• Thorough knowledge of core components of the public cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
• Deep understanding of cloud native database services (AWS preferred)
• Expertise in relational and NoSQL database design and architecture, capacity and scalability.
• Experience migrating databases from data centers to cloud platforms
• Experience in implementing and streamlining observability: monitoring, metrics, KPIs and alerting
• • Run the production operations DB infrastructure to maintain reliability, performance, scalability, and security.
• You are highly skilled at building relationships with engineering teams and shepherding architectural changes from inception to production implementation
• Billing and/or ERP domain experience is highly desirable
