Near North is looking for a Senior National Underwriting Counsel to lead all facets of commercial transactions within multiple lines of business, direct all stages of the closing process to ensure success, while answering key questions in a timely manner and providing the finest customer service. As the Senior National Underwriting Counsel, you will offer legal counsel and guidance to teammates, allocate, track and prioritize tasks to guarantee a high level of productivity, review clearance documents, policies, endorsements and other legal documentation, and research legal issues and recommend necessary revisions. You will collaborate with escrow officers, oversee closings to confirm all clearance... requirements are satisfied, work to resolve any underwriting and escrow issues, be in charge of both single and multi-site deals, and much more.

What you bring to the table:

  • 5+ years of national commercial title underwriting experience with a major national title insurer.
  • Law degree; licensed to practice law and in good standing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of commercial title principles and practices including, knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, title insurance regulations, and agency rules affecting the title industry.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills and writing abilities.
  • Ability to adapt to technology systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to competently and intelligently correspond with various client types including developers, lenders law firms, REITs, corporations, and high net worth individuals.

You’ll be working on:

  • Managing single and multi site portfolio transactions for efficient and successful closings.
  • Monitoring/prioritizing work tasks and timely assigning work product for distribution to necessary teammates to ensure high individual and team productivity levels.
  • Tracking commitment production by managing staff and production workflow.
  • Initiating coverage requests with underwriters pursuant to correspondence with transaction parties, analyzing and presenting these requests to state and regional underwriting counsel.
  • Determining available affirmative coverage in the form of policy endorsements; collaborating with local offices and NNTG staff underwriters to review ALTA/ASCM surveys and raising appropriate exceptions to title.
  • Collecting and reviewing clearance documents to remove encumbrances and exceptions to title policy.
  • Reviewing organizational documents of corporations, LLCs, partnerships and trusts to confirm validity and mitigate potential authority issues.
  • Coordinating preparation and revision of proforma Loan and Owner’s Policies and endorsements, as applicable and available pursuant to ALTA and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Confirming property taxes, transfer taxes, transfer forms, mortgage taxes and withholding requirements for each transaction.
  • Working with escrow officer to oversee closing and confirming clearance requirements have been met.
  • Ensuring recordability and insurability of transfer and financing instruments, recording documents at closing, issuing final title policies.
  • Practicing responsive underwriting.
  • Mentoring and training colleagues, as necessary.

With over 23 offices across the Midwest and Florida, we’d love to have someone in close proximity to a physical location, but we are open to this being a fully remote role for the right candidate
