full time senior tech

Job Details

BrightHive is a public benefit corporation focused on data collaboratives. Through our data collaboration management platform and strategic support services, BrightHive transforms the way organizations responsibly share data, make decisions, and create shared value. Together with our growing network of trusted partners, we build and support open source, interoperable data infrastructure necessary for organizations, networks, and communities to share data more effectively and securely.

We’re looking for a full-time Senior Support Engineer to join our team as we accelerate adoption of BrightHive Data Collaborations across organizations, networks, and communities. As our first support engineer, you’ll get to know our customers, learn their problems, and write code to solve them using our platform. Sometimes, that will mean working with our product and engineering team to spec out new features; other times, it will mean writing custom calculation pipelines or ETLs. You’ll be the... technical face of the company, and will gain subject matter expertise across a variety of sectors--particularly education and workforce development. And as we grow our team, we’ll be looking to you to establish yourself in a leadership role. In addition to working with our customers, you’ll also partner with our internal product & engineering, account management, and consultative services teams. You’ll set the tone and precedent for the BrightHive enterprise customer experience.

About you

We’re looking for an experienced Python programmer who likes solving problems--problems that range from simple to complex, but which will generally be broken down into digestible chunks. In addition to core Python, we’re looking for someone who is familiar with common analytics libraries like numpy, pandas, and scikit-learn. Since our pipelines are orchestrated using Apache Airflow, familiarity with it is a definite plus. Our frontend software is written in React, but we don’t anticipate you’ll be writing much Javascript; it’s more likely you’d find yourself working on occasion with our DevOps engineer using tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.

Just as important, you should look forward to working on something new every week, and to applying what you’ve learned in new contexts. You should be an adept technical communicator, since you’ll be working directly with our customers’ technical teams. You might find yourself sitting down with a state Department of Higher Education official and discussing possible return-on-investment metrics for vocational ed programs; or you might find yourself figuring out a way to extract data from an idiosyncratic CRM that a nonprofit deployed in 1993. If these sound like interesting challenges, this might be the right role for you.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop data pipelines, and configure and deploy APIs, using BrightHive’s Python-based platform.
  • Work with our customer success and consulting service providers to understand client needs and the scope of client deliverables.
  • Identify requests which require or suggest new platform features, and provide input to our product team to scope and prioritize them.
  • Provide support to customers in identifying and debugging problems with their data pipelines.
  • Work with our DevOps engineer and our security consultants to identify potential vulnerabilities with client-specific code.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 3+ years experience as a data engineer, DevOps engineer, or other related role.
  • Experience working directly with technical client stakeholders
  • Strong Python skills, and familiarity with common analytics libraries like numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, pandas, and statsmodels.
  • Experience with Docker and AWS.
  • Familiarity with Apache Airflow is a plus.
  • Teamwork mentality, with the ability to self-manage as needed. (Most of the company works remotely, so autonomy is important.)
  • Ability to learn quickly with the desire to adjust and grow as the company expands. Management experience is a plus.
  • Mission alignment--you should be motivated by the desire to make the data marketplace more structured and transparent, and to use data to help empower disadvantaged communities
